One of the most historic and famous sites in the Ozarks, the Shepherd of the Hills Homestead is where famed author and award-winning novelist Harold Bell Wright wrote his popular book (and-now famous outdoor drama in Branson) – the “Shepherd of the Hills.”
Now, visitors have a chance to visit this historic site when they take part in the Historic Homestead Tour, which takes guests through to see the sights and experience the history of the famous grounds.
Tour the Historic Homestead
Guests that visit the property will be taken on a guided tour of the grounds – where you will visit some of the most historic and renown spots that played a part in the book.
Tour the Famous Property!
Throughout your exploration of the property, you will come across some of the most historic buildings areas that include:
-
Old Matt’s Cabin
Those familiar with the novel will find this to be one of the highlights of their visit as it is the actual home of Matt (one of the main characters in “Shepherd of the Hills”).
Sitting in its original spot, this century-old cabin is listed on the National Historic Registry and plays a focal point in the storyline.
-
Inspiration Point
Recognized as the second-highest peak in Missouri, it is at this location that author Harold Bell Wright took notes for the story and camped as he created the storyline.
Looking out over the beautiful Ozark Mountains and forests across Mutton Hollow and even the mountains of northern Arkansas, it provides a vantage point and view that is unmatched anywhere in the region.
Along with a monument that marks the area where the author compiled his notes, the spot also includes six carved statues that represent the main characters including: Little Peter, Sammy Lane, The Shepherd, Old (and Young Matt), and Aunt Mollie.
-
Old Mill Theatre
As you make your way from Inspiration Point, you will encounter this outdoor theatre that was built nearly a half-century ago. This part of the tour provides you with an up-close look at the popular outdoor drama “Shepherd of the Hills” for an intriguing peek behind the curtains of one of the area’s most well-known productions.
-
Morgan Community Church
What was once going to be torn down, this church was rescued in 1991 and moved to Inspiration Point – where it still stands today. It offers a similar look and character that many of the churches shared when Harold Bell Wright visited as he traversed the countryside of the state.
-
Jenning’s Still
Witness the art of moonshine making for an authentic look at how the famous Ozarks alcohol was made.
