An outdoor drama and LIVE production that is unrivaled, the Shepherd of the Hills is brought to life in the heart of the Ozark Mountains!
The Ozarks’ Famous Story Brought to Life!
Recreating the famous 1907 novel by beloved author Harold Bell Wright – the Shepherd of the Hills Outdoor play brings the drama, heartache, love, and inspiring story to life each night with a cast of more than three dozen performers.
A Story of Drama, Love, & Inspiration
Based in the heart of the Ozark Mountains, Harold Bell Wright’s timeless novel shares a story (now more than a hundred years old) that involves the people of the Ozarks and is set against the famous mountains and forests of the area.
The story shares heartache, love, betrayal, justice, and inspiration – in a story that would become one of the most popularly and wide-read books of its kind.
With several movies (including the most famous of which starred legendary actor John Wayne), and multiple recreations of the story – the show in Branson, Missouri brings one of the most amazing stories of our time to new generations of audiences each year.
An Outdoor Drama of Unmatched Production!
Since 1960, the show has been performing for audiences in Branson, Missouri – in the hills where Harold Bell Wright actually wrote the novel more than a century ago.
A cast of dozens of performers brings to life the characters as more than 40 actors and performers take the stage, live animals take part in the show (including sheep, horses, and more), an original 1908 DeWitt car, and a real-life burning cabin!
Audiences are seated in a comfortable outdoor amphitheater that allows for a one-of-a-kind show-going experience unmatched by any other production in the country!
More than 50+ Years of Performances!
Millions of people from around the world have had the chance to experience this once-in-a-lifetime production! Running continuously for more than half a century, it shares the lives, trials, and tribulations of the Ozarks’ and its rich cultural history.

Love the play each time, the kids were just starry-eyed the whole time, especially when they could get up and dance. The following Friday we took the tower tour and were lucky to have a man named Thomas give us a private tour. The man was simply great, kids soaked everything in and the way he taught and showed them the cabin, pictures, the table where the book was written… well that man was the best part of the show/tour. I know he plays Olie in the show and the banjo and was graet as well, maybe that’s why he’s there 27 years.
My hat goes off to all of you, but Thomas I think the things he showed them and took the time will be a long time memory, great job Thomas.

I saw this show with our older children 20 years ago. We thought it was closed and when we discovered it open, we had to revisit with our younger children. Everybody thoroughly enjoyed it again. I really believe it was better than before. Thanks to all of the actors and actresses for their hard work. Please don’t let it go away. We have grandchildren that will need to see it in the next few years.

My family and I had checked into seeing this show several years ago (as we had always heard it’s a staple of Branson), but unfortunately didn’t get the opportunity to see it, as a VERY low budget family at the time, the ticket prices were a bit high for us. Leaving with our heads hung low, we all have wanted to see it ever since.
Last year when they announced the show was to be no more, we were all very upset, but none as much as I was. We always wanted to see it. Dynamics in our family have changed some and when we heard the show was opening back up, we got so excited.
On a very quick, unplanned 24 hr trip into the hills, we took the Homestead Tour, and not only had a GREAT tour guide (Jacob), but we just enjoyed the entire experience as a whole. Coming home we planned to go back in a month. Needless to say, none of us had read the book until then. I read the book 3 times in one month and just couldn’t wait to see the play. We went to the show 9-26-14 and it was EVERYTHING we could have asked for.
Between the hospitality of all involved (it felt like going to see family), the talented actors, great seating… it was all wonderful. I only would have liked to see our tour guide (Jacob) in the play more this time, but o well, maybe next time!!!
I would recommend this show HIGHLY to anyone, for any amount of money.

Great show, this June was our fourth trip to Branson over a ten year period and we finally saw the show. It was a most entertaining performance and we will see it again when we return.

I love the show. First time I attended was in 1979, I was in 2nd grade and it was a class trip. We traveled to Branson from Coon Rapids IA. My second visit was on my honeymoon in 2000 with my second husband who had never seen it. He loved it as well as we have made 2 others trips to the show and planning a third for this next weekend. We have brought all 6 of our children and my mother and grandmother. All of them enjoyed it immensely. Definitely a 5 star show.
Stephen Stanley –

We’ve seen the show a dozen times over the years and it’s still just as good, if not better than it has ever been.
The kids love the outdoor theatre and huge production, you can tell they put a lot of effort into making sure everyone enjoys the show.

My husband and I went to see the show as part of our date night last night. We had not been in many years and have to say we had a great time. The customer services was great from the women who gave us our tickets all the way through to the last person who thanked us for coming as we got in our car to leave. The story that the play is based on is a timeless one. The actors were good and there is a lot of drama as well as comedy. If you have never experienced it or have not been in a while I recommend that you go. The age of the audience ranged from three to seniors like my husband and myself and everyone seemed to enjoy it. We almost lost this treasured piece of the areas history, lets try to keep it going by giving it our support.

We last saw the show in 2013, when it was thought to be the last year. Prayed for something special to happen for the next year to continue. Glad the play is still able to continue on.
Was afraid it was gone this year as was here in June of this year and was closed the whole week we were here. Back now in August and was happy to see it was open. Was as happy as would be seeing the Cardinals win the World Series. And, that is pretty happy. All the flags on the poles and the trams out looked great. Hope we can go see it again soon.
Hope the play can continue for years to come. Great Ozark history play. Cast does an excellent job.

My husband, parents, and I attended the show on Monday evening. According to a Branson Shows booklet we got at our hotel, we thought the show started at 8:30 unaware that in September it moves to 7:30. We arrived at 7:38. From the moment we arrived we felt like everyone was going out of their way to provide an enjoyable experience. The lady behind the countered expedited our tickets. The owner rode the trolley with us to the seating area to explain the part we missed. The staff was friendly and helpful. The show was amazing and so worth the extra money for front row seats! Thank you for the extra attention. You’ve got a great thing going and I hope you are very successful.

I lived in Branson and have seen this show many times and no 2 visits were the same. In my opinion a visit to Branson would not be complete with out a visit to the Sheperd of the Hills its a classic. Love and enjoy it each time I have saw it. Fantastic!!!
Patti –
By far the best show Branson has to offer. I’ve seen it too many times to count over the years and enjoy it every time. So glad it didn’t have to close. Can’t wait to see it again in June.
Cindy Canfield –
We saw the play last night, opening show (after rain cancelled it two times). It is well worth your time to take in a bit of history of The Ozarks and the performances were superb! Lots of action, romance, and “inspiration.” We will definitely recommend it to family and friends and will see it again, soon.
